Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is commonly called Lou Gehrig’s Disease after the Yankee Baseball player that died from the disease.  ALS is estimated to afflict 30,000 Americans with most patients dieing with 2-5 years of diagnosis.  Typically the illness presents itself after age 50 but can strike both men and women at any age. The disease only affects the muscles of the patient progressing to total paralysis.  It does not affect the mind or the senses.  The cause is unknown and there is no cure.
