I had retired in 1997 to pursue a second career as a wildlife photographer.  A year later I was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease.  Almost at the same time I was selected for an Artist-in-Residence at the Buffalo National River in Arkansas in 1998 and decided to complete the residency despite my diagnosis.  During the residency I had a lot of time to reflect upon my life and made a decision to continue living my life as best as I could.  In November of 1998 my diagnosis was changed to Primary Lateral Sclerosis, a rare, related disease with the same prognosis although a slower rate of progression.
