The American west in part symbolizes a rugged indepen- dence.  In contrast, the progressive loss of muscle control ALS necessitates each patient’s dependence upon a primary caregiver. Additionally each ALS patient has a support group consisting of family, friends and medical staff to provide the patient and the primary caregiver with medical and emotional support.
